School attendance challenges can affect more than children and youth. They can affect the entire family, often creating stress, disrupting daily routines, and leaving parents and caregivers unsure of how to support their child.

This information session shares insights and practical strategies to help parents and caregivers navigate school attendance challenges while maintaining a healthy relationship with their child.

It provides information to help you better understand school avoidance, recognize the early warning signs, understand the common causes of absenteeism, and work in partnership with your child’s school to address challenges and support your child’s return to school.

The session also provides practical strategies to help you support your child, offering strategies for fostering communication, building supportive environments and routines at home, and problem-solving collaboratively with your child. In addition, it offers strategies to help parents and caregivers better cope with school attendance challenges.

The information session is facilitated by Melissa Chung, Program Manager of Social Work Services at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB), and co-facilitated by Catherine Shea, Family Peer Supporter at Pleo, and Ariel Burns, School Social Worker at OCDSB. The session is hosted by OCDSB as part of its Speaker Series and is offered in English.
